Keyboard Layout

The following can be used to change the default keyboard layout.

Please note that the keyboard layout settings should be applied to the offline WinPE DEFAULT hive. The following list includes the codes for a limited set of keyboard layouts. This list is not exhaustive -

ScratchSpace (RAMDisk size)

This setting controls the amount of writeable space on the SYSTEMDRIVE that will be available when WinPE is running. The default size for the build varies depending on your build version - WinPE 3.0 for example has 32MB of available space, whereas WinPE 5.x has 512MB.

Please note that in WinPE 5.x and WinPE 10 based builds, this setting will be ignored if the system has more than 1GB of RAM. If more than 1GB of RAM is available then the RAM disk will be set to 512MB. If the system has 1GB or less RAM then the size specified in the registry settings below will be used.

Please note that the RAMDisk settings should be applied to the offline WinPE SYSTEM hive. The following list includes supported sizes (in MiB). This list is not exhaustive and there are reports of 1024 MiB RAMDisks functioning in WinPE 3.x -

Screen Refresh and WallpaperHost.exe

PLEASE NOTE - This fix does not apply to Windows 6.0 or 6.1 based builds.

Issue:
The screen does not automatically refresh/update after operations are carried out. This includes after -

• Creating a file or directory
• Renaming a file or directory
• Deleting a file or directory
• Moving a file or directory

Resolution:
Remove WallpaperHost.exe from the filesystem. E.g. in the case of a RAM loading WinPE, remove WallpaperHost.exe from the boot image in the WinPE .wim file -
wimlib-imagex.exe PATH\boot.wim 2 --command="delete '/Windows/System32/WallpaperHost.exe'"

If the .wim file has a read-only attribute then this will need to be cleared prior to running the above command. E.g. -
attrib.exe -r "PATH\boot.wim"
